In Tampa Florida, what began as an innocent prank has mutated into Felony accusations of Computer Crime. Florida eighth-grader Domanik Green was arrested on felony charges for logging onto his teachers computer and changing the background image of her desktop to two men kissing. Green reportedly said he did so “to annoy him.”
Thats when things spiraled out of control. Detention? Suspension? Try Felony charges for unauthorized access of a computer, computer system, or computer network. Green was arrested by sheriff’s deputies, processed, and released from a juvenile detention facility. Almost as an afterthought, Green was also suspended from school for 10 days and could face five years in jail and $5,000 in fines.
Hacker in the making?
Green had previously received a three-day suspension for accessing the system inappropriately. He simply guessed the password. Not exactly a code-breaker, the password was the teacher’s last name. He said he discovered it by watching the teacher type it in.
Green only used this teacher’s computer because another he logged into had no camera.
A spokeswoman claimed the school district is in the process of changing the network password. Apparently there was other sensitive information on the computer, like exam answers–although there is no evidence that Green accessed that information.
Hacking Away
No doubt, given his age and clean record, he will be offered some sort of probation or intervention program, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has stated that “it should serve as a warning to other students.”
